Juliet – Nearly a Vet
Hi! I’m Juliet. I’m ten years old. And I’m nearly a vet!
I bet you’re wondering how someone who is only ten years old could nearly be a vet. It’s pretty simple really. My mum’s a vet. I watch what she does and help out all the time. There’s really not that much to it, you know…
Published by Penguin, ‘Juliet – Nearly a Vet’ is a fun series about a ten-year-old girl who thinks she is almost a vet. Her mother is a vet and Juliet watches her all the time, and there really isn’t that much to it! ‘Juliet’ has received a large number of excellent reviews as well as winning the Environmental Award for Children’s literature 2014 (Bush Baby Rescue: Juliet Nearly a Vet, Book 4). Individual books in the series have been twice nominated for the CBCA younger readers section (2014 and 2015), and nominated for the Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature (2014).

Juliet – Nearly a Vet – The Great Pet Plan
My best friend Chelsea and I love animals. I have a dog Curly and two guinea pigs, but we need more pets if I’m going to learn to be a vet. Today, we had the best idea ever… We’re going to have a pet sleepover! Of course, there’s no need to tell our parents about it. I mean, what could possibly go wrong with having a few extra pets to stay?
Juliet – Nearly a Vet – At The Show
Juliet and Chelsea have offered to help Maisy enter her pony in the local show. But training Midgie is proving to be a little more difficult than expected: he is very naughty and very greedy and Juliet is going to need every vet trick in the book. Will the Show be a total disaster…
Juliet – Nearly a Vet – Farm Friends
It’s Spring and all the animals on Maisy’s farm are having babies. Maisy says I can stay for a whole week and help out. There are chicks and ducklings hatching, orphan lambs to feed, and I can’t wait for Bella to have her calf! So many exciting adventures for a trainee vet!
Juliet – Nearly a Vet – Bush Baby Rescue
A terrible bushfire has struck and Mum’s vet clinic is in chaos. Every day more and more injured baby animals arrive. Chelsea and I have never been busier! There’s an adorable baby koala to feed by hand, a fat little wombat to bandage, and a funny blue-tongued lizard that Max is determined to make his pet. But who knew that babies needed so much feeding! I may never sleep again!
Juliet – Nearly a Vet – Beach Buddies
It’s the holidays and we’re going camping by the beach. I’m bringing my vet-kit in case of any animal emergencies. Vets needs to be prepared for anything! I can’t wait to toast marshmallows by the campfire, swim in the sea and explore the rock-pools – there are so many amazing animals at the beach. Chelsea and I really want to see a dolphin or a whale.
Juliet – Nearly a Vet – Zookeeper for a Day
I’ve won a competition to be a zookeeper for a day! My best friend Chelsea is coming too. I can’t wait to learn all about the zoo animals. There will be meerkats, tigers and penguins to feed. And maybe some zoo vets who need some help (I must remember my vet-kit!). Most exciting of all, there’s a baby elephant due to be born!
Juliet – Nearly a Vet – The Lost Dogs
There was a huge storm last night and now there are lots of lost dogs. One turned up outside my window (he must have known I’m nearly a vet and could help him). Luckily, Chelsea, Mum and I are helping out at the Lost Dogs’ Home.
Juliet – Nearly a Vet – Cat Show Queen
There’s a cat show in town and some of the cats are going to board at Mum’s vet clinic. Chelsea and I can’t wait to see all the different types of cats.
The owners have special techniques for preparing their pets for the show – and some are very fussy. When there’s a cat-astrophe, it’s lucky that my best friend is almost a world-famous animal trainer and groomer!
Juliet – Nearly a Vet – Outback Adventure
It’s really hot and dry in the outback where my grandparents live. I’m so excited that Chelsea is coming with us to visit them. I wonder what outback animals we’ll see? My cousin Jarrod will be there, but I get the feeling he doesn’t like me very much and – even worse – he doesn’t seem to like animals! Maybe this is my chance to change his mind…
Juliet – Nearly a Vet – The Big Flood
It’s been raining for days and the paddocks near our house are flooded. Luckily, Chelsea and I are all ready to help – a vet has to be ready to go at a moment’s notice! But there are many small animals that need rescuing. Can we convince Dad to take us out in the canoe before the water rises further?
Juliet – Nearly a Vet – Rainforest Camp
We’re off on a school camp to the rainforest. Chelsea, Maisy and I are excited about all the different animals we might spot on our nature walks and torchlight treks. Chelsea is NOT excited about the creepy crawlies we might find! I’ve brought my vet-kit along just in case we find any animals in need of help…
Juliet – Nearly a Vet – Playground Pets
Chelsea and I go to such a cool school – we get to have playground pets! Guinea pigs, lizards, fish and insects are all part of our classroom. This week, we have a replacement teacher though, and Miss Fine doesn’t know much about animals. But we do (it’s so handy being nearly a vet).
We’re going to be flat-out keeping track of them all and doing our schoolwork, but I’m sure nothing will go too wrong…
